Sheri Jones-Moffett Steps Out
By Richard Picart
There are many artists that receive an opportunity to step out from former groups and choirs to pursue a solo venture. Sometimes it works out great. Other times you wished they would step back into the group. Sheri Jones Moffett is an artist whose time to step forward was long over due.
Presenting her EMI Gospel debut album, Renewed, Jones-Moffett has carved out a fresh niche in the ear of gospel music fans. This ten song collection is a safe bet for Sheri in that she took smart risks necessary to draw the listener closer to her heart, her music and to their God.
Lead single "Renewed", offers a fun throwback moment that is packed with smooth bass lines, classic Motown vocals and fat horns. Music critiques will pick up on the effortless vocal performances that make this song reachable for aspiring singers and fans alike.
It seems to be in style to experiment with what I call the "Outkast" sonic factor in new music. Well that factor is definitely in “Free Indeed”. This joint throws a little hand clapping, strings and some autotune in a bowl and mixes up a funky musical cake that is irresistible, fun and authentic. The lyrics are light and sincere. Maybe not a Sunday morning jam, but definitely a Saturday night party anthem.
The influence of Donald Lawrence's mentorship is felt in the ballad "Not Too Late Too Dream". I say this because Sheri hits the bull’s-eye by presenting a classic and emotional message of encouragement that is packaged in stories that are real and believable. This simple pop ballad will be a banner for many in this season of incredible change. I would call this song a “millionaire maker”. Someone will listen to this song with their last dollar in their pocket and begin again to believe in their God-given destiny.
I wished there were more up-tempo songs on the album. At times it was a little quiet in the car while listening. Nevertheless, the lyrics are genuine. The performance is stellar, and the ministry is definitely her own.
